Bibliography

These are the books I have used, in conjunction with websites and local guides, to identify bird photos on this site.

Australia

The Field Guide to the Birds of Australia, by Graham Pizzey & Frank Knight, 2007 (8th ed), HarperCollinsPublishers
ISBN-13: 978-0207199356

An excellent fieldguide, relaxing to consult. Some may think it’s too spread out, but I’d definitely pack it on a trip to Oz.

Brazil

A Field Guide to the Birds of Brazil, by Ber van Perlo, 2009, Oxford
ISBN-13: 978 019530155 7

Took me a while to get used to the white space and sketchiness, but now that I have, I really like this book.

Guio de Campo Avis Brasilis, Avifauna Brasileira, the Avis Brasilis Field Guide to the Birds of Brazil (2 vols), by Tomas Sigrist, 2009, Avis Brasilis
ISBN-13: 978 856012007 9

At first I thought the illustrations were better than van Perlo, but now I think it’s better in some areas and worse in others. I’ll take vol 1 on next trip though for compactness.

Ecuador

The Birds of Ecuador, Vol II - Field Guide, by Robert Ridgely and Paul Greenfield, 2001, Cornell
ISBN-13: 978 080148721 7

A nice book, pleasant to use, a tour de force and good for desktop identifications. It’s a shame descriptions are not on facing pages, and bird order is odd at times. Didn’t pack it - too heavy.

Panama

A Guide to the Birds of Panama, with Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Honduras, by Robert Ridgely and John Gwynne, 1989 (2nd ed), Princeton
ISBN-13: 978 069102512 4

Good in 1989, but now dated. Get the new Angehr and Dean, 2010, instead.

Europe

Collins Bird Guide, Killian Mullarney, Lars Svensson, Dan Zetterström, Peter Grant, 1999, HarperCollins
Collins Bird Guide 2nd Ed, Killian Mullarney, Lars Svensson, Dan Zetterström, 2009, HarperCollins
ISBN-13: 978 000726726 2

One of the best fieldguides out there. Truly excellent illustrations and portable to boot. The maps in the 2nd ed are significantly more accurate than the first.
