I saw Fine-spotted Woodpecker outside Farakunku Lodge and again a few times upriver. Female, above, black moustachial stripe. Male, below, red stripe.

The female African Grey Woodpecker has a plain grey head - the male has a red crest. Plain shoulders and chest. Several seen at Farakunku Lodge.

The Yellow-crowned Gonolek was often seen and heard - very loud call and bright red colouring make it very distinctive. Even seen at lodge in Janjanbureh - tapping on my window! But kept its distance for photos.

The male Rose-ringed Parakeet has a neck ring and light-greyish tint to the back of the head. The female is all green. Both have a rose bill. Thanks to Danielle J for the Senegal photo.

I saw them both near the coast and up river in Gambia on quite a few occasions.

There are now many populations of Rose-ringed Parakeet populations in London and other European cities, from escaped and released birds. Someone told me it was the 12th most common bird in London in 2012.
