Mistle Thrush

Mistle Thrush - Turdus viscivorus

Bird name: Mistle Thrush
Latin: Turdus viscivorus
Other: Grive draine (Fr) • Misteldrossel (De) • Zorzal charlo (Es) • Tordela (It) • Grote lijster (Nl) • Dubbeltrast (Sv) • Tordoveia (Pt)
Family: TurdidaeThrushes
Range: Europe, to North Africa and Central Asia
Similar: Song Thrush, Fieldfare

Mistle Thrushes are found in the Mercantour and most of southern Europe and the UK throughout the year.

Here they had been feeding on a rowan bush near habitations (1800m, 0°C) in December. In July we saw pairs in the forest at a similar altitude.

Mistle Thrushes have a more upright posture than Song Thrushes and a vertical light patch on the cheek, a dark smudge on the side of the chest, pale outer coverts. Call a characteristic “rrrrrrrr” trill. Overall lighter and larger than Song Thrushes.More photos...

Fieldfare

Bird name: Fieldfare
Latin: Turdus pilaris

Family: TurdidaeThrushes
Range: N Europe & Asia, migrating south to France, Italy, Spain, Turkey etc.
Similar: Redwing, Mistle Thrush

We saw hundreds of Fieldfares in the Mercantour last weekend at about 1900m just below the tree line. They perched in the upper branches of larch, which have shed most of their needles now, before resuming feeding on the many colourful rowan bushes. When startled they fly off in large flocks, much like starlings, before alighting a hundred yards away near other rowans. This was my first view of Fieldfare - I have never seen large flocks of thrushes like this. I don’t know if they stay all winter.

The adult Fieldfare has some orange on the chest, differentiating it from the Redwing which has orange on the flank. The 1st winter Fieldfare, pictured above, has very little colour on neck and chest. Fieldfare are quite white underneath, with light grey rump, brown shoulders and white underwings. Mostly yellow bill. A plump thrush.

Below, Rowan berries late November provide food for Fieldfare arriving from the north.

Latin: Turdus fuscater
Other: Paraulata morera, Mirla patinaranja (Es)
Family: TurdidaeThrushes
Range: Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia.
Similar: Glossy-black Thrush

The Great Thrush is a large bird and very large for a thrush. They are quite common and visible in the highlands of Ecuador - when I visited, one or two could always be found on the grassy slopes of Papallacta, often standing on a grassy knoll.

The male Great Thrush (above) is dull grey-black with bright yellow eyering and orange legs and bill. The female Great Thrush (below) is browner and lacks the yellow eyering.

Other: Blackbird (UK) • Eurasian Blackbird (US) • Merle Noir (Fr) • Amsel (De) • Mirlo común (Es) • Merlo (It) • Merel (Nl) • Koltrast (Sv) • Melro-preto (Pt)
Family: TurdidaeThrushes
Range: Widespread Europe, Eurasia
Similar: Females and juveniles are similar to thrushes

A female Blackbird picks up a shrivelled olive from last year’s windfall, before swallowing it hole. Olive trees are very popular with many species of birds during the winter, especially Starlings, once all the fig trees have been stripped of their remaining dried fruits.

The blackbird seems very common all year round in Monaco and the Cote d’Azur - often heard and seen. Typical garden bird.

Male blackbirds are black with yellow bill and eyering. Females are brown and speckled underneath, with dull beaks. Juveniles are even more mottled.

Creamy Bellied Thrush

Creamy Bellied Thrush - Turdus amaurochalinus

Bird name: Creamy Bellied Thrush
Latin: Turdus amaurochalinus
Other: Sabiá-poca (Br) • Sabiá común, Zorzal mandioca, Chalchalero, Tordo sabiá (Es)
Family: TurdidaeThrushes
Range: SC, SE South America: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay.
Similar: Pale-breasted Thrush

The yellow bill with pale belly are key features of the Creamy-bellied Thrush, but the bill can be greyish. The Creamy-bellied Thrush looks a bit stern because of its dark lores and curved upper mandible. The dark lores distinguish it from the Pale-breasted Thrush. Head and back are generally uniform dark grey or brownish. Dark vertical lines on the throat. Legs pale pinkish grey.

The Creamy-bellied Thrush is found in much of Central and South America, is resident in the south of Brazil and migrates north in Brazil in the southern winter. Can be seen in parks and gardens. The bird pictured above was in the grounds of Serra dos Tucanos Lodge.

Black Faced Solitaire

Copyright: monacoeye • Panama, May 2010 • Do not copy without permission

Bird name: Black Faced Solitaire
Latin: Myadestes melanops
Other:
Family: TurdidaeThrushes
Range: Mountains of Costa Rica and western Panama

The high mountain forests above Los Quetzales in Chiriqui resound to the entrancing, mystical sounds of the Black-faced Solitaire. Listening to recordings on the internet doesn’t do the song justice (eg here), because the frequencies can’t be captured with recording equipment and mp3.

The closest description I could give would be an aeolian harp or someone playing “wine glasses” by rubbing a wet finger around the rims of half-filled glasses. It is a high-pitched sound which carries, but also rich with deep tones. This ethereal song transforms the forest into a place of mystery - the first time I heard it I couldn’t believe that a bird could be the origin.

Although its song is often heard, I only saw a Black-faced Solitaire once. It is differentiated from other thrushes by its orange bill and legs, with dark iris and no orange eye-ring. It is dark grey with some white on wing and black face. Pictured below is a tree-trunk in which it was making a nest.More photos...
