Thrush Like Wren

campylorhynchus turdinus - thrush-like wren

Bird name: Thrush Like Wren
Latin: Cantorchilus longirostris
Other: Garrinchão-de-bico-grande (Br) • Soterrey Mirlo (Es)
Family: Troglodytidae • Wrens
Range: Amazonia, Pantanal, Bahia - Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil
Similar:

There is a tree you can climb with a rickety set of stairs on the approach road to Curicaca Lodge, off the Transpantaneira in the Pantanal. While standing on the upper platform, the Thrush-like Wren above alighted in the tree.

I also saw Thrush-like Wrens around the Lodge. It wasn’t initially obvious to me they were of the wren family from their large size, relaxed behaviour and plain colouring.

In the Pantanal subspecies pictured, Cantorchilus longirostris unicolor, barring is very faint on the chest but diagnostic on the flanks and under the tail. It has a light supercilium.

Family: Troglodytidae • Wrens
Range: Eastern Brazil

I saw this Long-Billed Wren late afternoon on the perimeter of the garden of Serra dos Tucanos Lodge, in Rio de Janeiro state on a recent trip.

It had an attractive call and was not quite as furtive as some smaller wrens.More photos...

There was a Mountain Wren coming in to feed on insects at Guango Lodge, near Papallacta on the eastern slope of the Andes. Relatively common in Andean montane forest but fast moving.

The Mountain Wren is more richly coloured than the House Wren.More photos...

The Wren is widespread throughout Europe, but small and shy!

The Wren is difficult to see on the south coast of France in the summer but easier to see in the winter.

Many thanks to Alexia for passing on this photo of a wren on her balcony - a new Monaco record for this site.More photos...

Grey Breasted Wood Wren

Grey Breasted Wood Wren - Henicorhina leucophrys
Copyright: monacoeye • Panama, May 2010 • Do not copy without permission

Bird name: Grey Breasted Wood Wren
Latin: Henicorhina leucophrys
Other: Gray Breasted Wood Wren (US) • Sotterey Montes Pechigris (Es)
Family: Troglodytidae • Wrens
Range: Mexico to northern Bolivia
Similar: White-breasted Wood-wren

There were several Grey-breasted Wood Wrens in this location in Chiriqui, Panama, and with some patience, we eventually coaxed them out of the gloom of the canopy, for long enough to be visible enough for a photo. As with other wrens, they have an attractive clear song.

The Grey-breasted Wood Wren is similar to the White-breasted Wood Wren, with dark cap and prominent white stripe above eye. The main difference is a grey chest instead of a white chest.

Also seen and heard in NW Ecuador.

Latin: Cantorchilus modestus
Other:
Family: Troglodytidae • Wrens
Range: Southern Mexico to Central Panama
Similar:

A male and female Plain Wren, according to the guide, though I couldn’t tell you which was which. I think these are differentiated from the other similar wrens by the relatively faint barring on wings and tail.

We saw Plain Wrens several times near the Ammo Dump in the Canal zone of central Panama. But often only a fleeting glimpse. Often heard.More photos...

House Wren

Bird name: House Wren
Latin: Troglodytes aedon
Other: Corruíra-de-casa (Br) • Curucucha (Es) • Troglodytes aedon musculus
Family: Troglodytidae • Wrens
Range: Widespread Americas
Similar:

The House Wren is found throughout the Americas. The musculus subspecies pictured above is called the Southern House Wren, and sometimes viewed as a separate species.

The House Wren is a great garden bird, with an attractive song. It is not shy and much easier to see than its European counterpart. I saw it in most habitats I visited in Brazil.

Still easily observed in central Panama (lowest two photos), around the hotels, but seemed to be a little less confiding than in Brazil.

I saw the Rufous Breasted Wren several times in Panama, but as with most other wrens he was very difficult to photograph.

The bird pictured above was singly clearly and merrily at the Logo de Volcan in Chiriqui, and approached when I mimicked his calls, but moved quickly in dense foliage.

The Rufous-breasted Wren is identified by its orangey-cinnamon underparts and black and white speckled throat.More photos...

There are dozens of photography sites out there which specialise in hummingbirds, but I’ve never seen a photographer who specialises in wren photography! Wrens are fascinating birds, but more often heard than seen. They are often only a few yards away from forest paths, and yet so well hidden that they remain unseen.

This White-breasted Wood Wren was seen on Plantation Rd near Canopy Tower in Panama, but didn’t provide much of a photo opportunity.

The White-breasted Wood Wren is differentiated from the similar Grey-breasted Wood Wren by its mostly white underparts.
